Welcome to How to Market Anything Online
I want to congratulate you for taking the first step towards enjoying the freedom that comes with having a highly profitable Internet Business. Whether you have an existing online business that you want to take to the next level or even if you have nothing more than an idea, I am going to show you exactly how to take it to the next level, no matter where you are. I truly believe that anyone who wants to be successful online can do it no matter their background, age, experience, financial resources or education.
I’m a perfect example. I don’t have a college education. I didn’t start with a lot of money. In fact, I started my first Internet Company for under $100. I sold it 3 years later for 2.2 million dollars. I have also launched 3 multi-million dollar companies since 1994 and have helped companies of all sizes generate hundreds of millions of dollars in online revenue. It has become a cliché but its true, the Internet really does allow a kitchen table start-up to compete with and even beat a multi-million dollar corporation in the same industry.
The Question That Almost Killed The Business...
Even if you think that you know what you are going to sell, open yourself to other possibilities. There once was a chiropractor who wanted to increase his practice using the techniques you are about to learn. The question he was asking himself kept him from seeing all of the profit centers that his knowledge could bring him.
His original question was, “How can I get more appointments.” He changed his question from, “How can I get more appointments” to, “How can I expand my business?” He found that in addition to generating more appointments with his patients, he could also package his knowledge into books, e-books and audio programs. The Doctor now makes more from his information products than he does from his patients AND he is selling these products online 24 hours a day!
So even if you think you have the best widget in the world, don’t just think about selling widgets. Think about the knowledge and information you have about making the widgets that people may be willing to pay you for. Think about the other products and services that widget buyers might be interested in buying. The people who made the most money during the California Gold Rush weren’t the prospectors. They were the people selling the shovels, picks, hotel rooms, drinks and food.
The Two Reasons People Buy….
So, why do people buy? People buy things for one of two reasons. They either perceive that what they are buying will solve a problem or they believe that it will lead to increased pleasure now or in the future. We’ve heard the old saying that people buy from emotions but justify with logic.
The Two Reasons People Buy Something:
1. Solve a problem (fulfill a need).
2. To fulfill a desire (experience pleasure).
The best product or service to sell is one that people already want. You can find out a great deal about what people already want if you can first find out what they are already looking for. You can find out a great deal about what people are looking for by looking through the things people search for on search engines.
This basic market research is a crucial step to make sure that there are people who actually want what you are thinking of offering. Entrepreneurs and inventors often fall in love with their idea before they have researched the market and are shattered when a lack of sales communicates a very painful message to the entrepreneur that could have been avoided if he or she did their research.
Avoid The Online Graveyard…..
Online products and services that don’t succeed often were doomed before they ever started because the person didn’t do enough research in the beginning to make sure that there were people looking for what they were selling AND those same people were willing to pay for it. Here are some of my favorite tools for researching potential markets:
Keyword Selector Tools
Google & Yahoo both offer free tools to help you find keywords related to your product. You simply go to their “Keyword Selector Tool” and type in the word or phrase that is related to your product, business or industry.
The site will return the most popular related terms people are searching for along with the number of searches for the term on that particular search engine network and it’s totally free.
Yahoo’s Buzz Index and Google’s Zeitgeist are two additional free tools that can be a valuable resource for finding what people are looking for. These aren’t specific enough to find specific search terms you want to target but they give you a very general overview of search trends. You can find links to all of the Marketingtoolsboth search tools in our Top 10 Internet Marketing Tools Directory.
The Secret Weapon of Internet Professionals
If you are looking for something with a little more “horsepower” you can try out Keyword Discovery or WordTracker. These are the tools that professionals use to find the best keywords and customers to target. They both show you the number of people searching for your topic or related topics.
They also create a competitive analysis that tells you which keywords would be the best for you to potentially target and which are most competitive on the search engines. You can try them both out for free. If you like them, they cost a few dollars but if you are serious about creating an internet business the value is priceless. They are both very similar and I use them both but overall I tend to prefer Keyword Discovery. You can get more information and links to both tools in our Top 10 Internet Marketing Tools Directory.
What is a Good number of searches to look for?
This really depends on your product. If you are selling a product that you profit $12,000 on each sale, you don’t need a lot of customers to make a good business. On the other hand, if you are selling a product that retails for $9.95 you are going to need a high volume of people to make it worth your while.
In general, I tend to like terms that have at least 1000 people searching for them on WordTracker but it really does vary with every product. In future lessons I will show you a formula to figure out exactly how much traffic you need based on your product.
How To Avoid Analysis Paralysis
We’ve covered some powerful tools that most people don’t know about. You have the power to compile a large amount of market research in a short amount of time. Although more detailed research should be done before committing to a new business or product line, you also should be very careful that Analysis Paralysis doesn’t set in.
I see people launch never ending quests for more research, more data, more studies before they begin. Many of these people never get started. They allow themselves to get slowly overloaded and overwhelmed by research until they don’t do anything about it. Eventually the product or idea is filed away never to be seen again.
Answer these 3 quick questions to get your momentum going right now:
1. What problem or problems will your product or service solve?
2. What pleasure will it provide or what pleasurable experience could it lead to?
3. What are 5-19 search terms that people would use to find your product or service (use the Yahoo Keyword Tool)?
